Fantasy

Sometimes, this world just isn't enough, right?  And, what's better than stepping to a world created by some of the most imaginative authors around?  That's what we bring to you on as consistent a basis as possible. Free and discounted ebooks in the Fantasy genre from bestselling authors. Never pay full price again to escape into thousands of different mindscapes!

Definition of the "Fantasy Genre": As alluded to above, the primary components of bestselling Fantasy ebooks are the creation of a rich and expansive other world.  While those other worlds can have aspects similar to our reality, the less so, the better.  Ebooks in the Fantasy genre also use magic commonly, and include magical creatures in their plot lines.  Perhaps one of the most important technical elements of a Fantasy ebook is that while the rules in the other world created by the author may not work in our reality, they are internally consistent to the story itself.

Some examples of bestselling Fantasy ebooks are George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones), J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings), Brandon Sanderson (The Way of Kings), and Piers Anthony (his entire Xanth series).  And, you know what?  We are going to throw the movie The Neverending Story in here, because it had a book in it after all, and it's a premier example of fantasy.

by Mark Jenkins

This debut collection from author Mark Jenkins folds modern day mountain climbing into the speculative wilderness of fantasy, sci-fi, and historical fiction.

In the short story Klickitat, a husband and wife climbing team are confronted by a long dormant stratovolcano waking under their feet, and something else; deeper.

Protectors, is a tale about a solo-climber's life-changing discovery of a powerful artifact at the site of a decades old plane crash in the Olympic Mountains.

K.A.O.S. ends with the novelette Signals: an unlikely pair discover they are the only people in the remote town of Whittier, Alaska not mysteriously put to sleep during a dark winter storm—and must team up if they hope to outwit an armed group of marauders prowling into town.

Slayer Witch: A Demon Slayer Urban Fantasy

by Katie French

Nothing like getting your ass kicked by a demon on the way to the most important job interview of your life.

But, that’s where I find myself right before trying to make a good impression on the supernatural investigation agency of my dreams. If I get the job, I can slay demons legally, unlike the criminal slaying I’ve been doing.

The only problem? I have to lie through my teeth about who I am or they’ll never hire me.

But the good news is I’m great in a fight, even if I fight dirty. The even better news is there are lots of openings at the agency. Unfortunately, they were created by a murderous cartel known as the Viceroys who seem to be releasing the demons and using their powers to take out most of the agency’s staff. This gets me the job and moves me and the other wet-behind-the-ears interns right in harm’s way.

Exactly where I like to be.

The other interns don’t think much of me, and the feeling’s mutual, especially in the case of Dax Murphy. He may look like a Hemsworth brother, but he’s arrogant as hell. Not my type. Really. I’ve got a lot to focus on with keeping my identity secret and not getting my head cut off by a Viceroy.

But maybe there’s more to Dax than eight-pack abs. And maybe secrets from the past don’t always stay buried.

If you like K.F. Breen, Patricia Briggs, Faith Hunter, Laurell K. Hamilton, Shannon Mayer, Kim Harrison, Ilona Andrews, Dannika Dark, and Jennifer Estep, you’ll enjoy this wildly fun read.

The Deep

by Alma Katsu

From the acclaimed and award-winning author of The Hunger comes an eerie, psychological twist on one of the world's most renowned tragedies, the sinking of the Titanic and the ill-fated sail of its sister ship, the Britannic.

Someone, or something, is haunting the ship. Between mysterious disappearances and sudden deaths, the guests of the Titanic have found themselves suspended in an eerie, unsettling twilight zone from the moment they set sail. Several of them, including maid Annie Hebley, guest Mark Fletcher, and millionaires Madeleine Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim, are convinced there's something sinister--almost otherwordly--afoot. But before they can locate the source of the danger, as the world knows, disaster strikes.

Years later, Annie, having survived that fateful night, has attempted to put her life back together. Working as a nurse on the sixth voyage of the Titanic's sister ship, the Britannic, newly refitted as a hospital ship, she happens across an unconscious Mark, now a soldier fighting in World War I. At first, Annie is thrilled and relieved to learn that he too survived the sinking, but soon, Mark's presence awakens deep-buried feelings and secrets, forcing her to reckon with the demons of her past--as they both discover that the terror may not yet be over.

Brilliantly combining the supernatural with the height of historical disaster, The Deep is an exploration of love and destiny, desire and innocence, and, above all, a quest to understand how our choices can lead us inexorably toward our doom.

Titan's Plague: The Trial

by Tom Briggs

Outside the rings of Saturn, Pati Lynch commanded a prison ship mining ice. Her crew mutinied, they tried to kill her, and she was the last one left standing.  Now, she stands trial for their murder.

Nancy Tate, Pati’s defense attorney, thinks she’ll go free this time because the prison ship’s records were damaged or erased. Without those records, the legal decision will be based on Pati’s testimony alone. However, and Nancy repeats this often, she cannot state aliens had instigated the revolt.

Pati knows she didn’t dream the apparition that appeared on her ship and claimed to be the ex-husband she accidentally killed, but she decides her attorney knows her business. And, it’d be in her best interest to follow her directions if she doesn’t want to be sentenced to a solitary, thirty-year trip back to Earth.

Then, the dreams started. They weren’t normal, even though they began in her fishing village back in Ireland. Soon, she was flying throughout the Saturnian system and into caverns on Titan, all while in a great ecstasy. Waking up gave her a suicidal depression that took most of a morning to recover from.

The trial at least was going well, if not easy. The prosecutor dragged every proceeding to its legal limit, and he made only superficial attempts at settling. This while the computer judge kept lowering the guilty score in each hearing. Pati tried to be patient and took a job working outside on Titan, which nearly cost her life when her rebreather was sabotaged.

At least the dreams were a source of solace, until, she was forced to decide… And now, nowhere is safe.

The Chocolate Prophecy (Heron Prophecies Book 1)

by E.L. Ward

"A great evil will be coming back into the world... and in two weeks' time, it will rain chocolate."

Enter the life of Jek - a humble lighthouse steward on the southern coast of Jast-Madiir. Along with his wife (whose name is Aaliyah… or was it Audrey?), Jek must daily meet the expectations of an iron-fisted dictatorship, a global dragon-Inquisition, and a clerical order of flying jellyfish-like creatures churning out new surveys at a dizzying pace. All-in-all, a fairly predictable tedium. But when any little demerit on his next inspection could cost him his life, it can be hard sometimes to keep from stressing out!

Of course, if Jek knew half the things at play just beyond his sleepy shores, he would be very stressed indeed. Neighboring Tophthaera is reeling under the Twin Queens’ civil war. To the north, insurrection threatens to claim the island of Maenea for the cause of “Free-Dome” – a very strange and unsettling new ideology. Even the stable nations must decide how to deal with the recent, accidental discovery of magic. And all the while, the threat of Onyxadon’s inevitable return clouds every counsel. Only the strength and wisdom of the Grand Inquisitor would seem adequate to avail against these many calamities. But he has been dormant for seventy-five years now.

Jek is, at best, dimly aware of such things… and perhaps better suited than anyone to be an ineffectual bystander anyway. But those luxuries are burst quite suddenly when he meets a crotchety old sailor man, only to be swept into a hair-brained Noble Quest to find the Knights of the Indigo Lodge, expose a secret Doom Fleet, and unravel the dreaded mystery of Proconsul Zedulon’s infamous “Chocolate Prophecy.”

The Big Crazy: A Gripping Police Procedural Thriller (The Skip Langdon Series Book 11)

by Julie Smith

PHONES ARE OUT AND THE CITY’S UNDER WATER—
A FIELD DAY FOR CRIMINALS! AND LOTS OF THEM ARE COPS…

August 29, 2005 - Doomsday: New Orleans is eighty per cent under water—no electricity, no phones, no 911 service, no rulesFacing the complete breakdown of systems and normality, New Orleans homicide Detective Skip Langdon is on her own to interpret and execute the only direction she’s given: Get out there and keep the peace.

With communications down and all emergency services on search and rescue, all Skip can hope to accomplish is helping the person right in front of her. More than once that person turns out to be Billy, a gutsy 15-year-old from Treme who’s in greater danger of being swamped by his chaotic home life than the Cat 5 hurricane Skip shelters him from.

When she escorts him home and discovers the scene of a possible homicide, homicide detecting must take a back seat to maintaining order—if not peace. Outrageous rumors are swirling, stirring up unrest, but what really bothers her is the one about a police department order to use the chaos as a cover for “cleaning up” by rounding up criminals and assassinating them. Now that just can’t be true. Can it?

But after she hears it for the third time, Skip teams up with the only cop in the city she’s positive she can trust, her former partner, movie-star handsome, kickass, praline-sweet Adam Abasolo. They may not be able to fix everything, but, as the bodies pile up, they are damn sure going to hit back at the guys who’re giving their department a black eye.

On any regular weekday, New Orleans lives up to its billing as The Big Crazy. In post-Katrina New Orleans, where the dirty cops and lunatics are running the asylum, author Julie Smith also takes us inside the actual asylum, Charity Hospital emergency psych unit, an unexpected oasis of comfort in stark contrast to endless amounts of ever-present filthy water and hordes of half-drowned people.

Smith strikes just the right note, capturing the massive tragedy of the events and the inevitable comedy as the survivors struggle to make sense of the closest thing to hell squared that any of them has ever seen.

Mystery fans who love hard-boiled women sleuths, lots of action and adventure, and offbeat police procedurals will love Detective Skip Langdon.
